Is reality a simulation or a dream within awareness

*Is the world we live in a simulation?*

In one sense, yes—and in another, no. The world is real, just as a dream is real. Not absolutely real, not independent or permanent, but real enough to be experienced, to touch us, shape us, and transform us.

It appears solid, vast, and outside of us. But a deeper look reveals something else—it arises from within.

What we take to be an external world is actually perceived through the filters of our own mind. It is interpreted, not directly seen.

Much like a projector casting images onto a screen, our awareness shines through the film of our thoughts, beliefs, and memories. Whatever is on that reel gets projected outward and becomes the world we see.

One person may watch the sunset and be moved to peace and awe, while another feels dread or sadness. The sunset hasn’t changed; the light entering their eyes is the same. What differs is the mind interpreting it. The meaning we assign to the moment is shaped by the inner landscape we carry—memories, emotions, past experiences.

*We don’t see the world as it is; we see it as we are.*

Modern neuroscience supports this understanding. *It tells us perception is a construction*. What we call “reality” is not directly experienced, but built in the brain through signals and past patterns.

This aligns strikingly with ancient philosophies. In Advaita Vedanta, the world is considered relatively real— *it exists, but not independently of the consciousness that knows it*.

In Yogacara Buddhism, this idea takes the form of vijnaptimatra—everything is of the nature of mind. The universe appears, like a dream, with internal coherence and structure, but it arises entirely within the field of awareness.

This leads us to the modern metaphor of the simulation.

The simulation hypothesis suggests we might be in a computer-generated reality, a program run by some higher intelligence.

But there’s a deeper spiritual truth that goes beyond this.

A simulation implies a creator, a coder, an external architect.

But in non-dual insight, awareness is self-born.

It has no cause, no beginning.

*It is not something created—it is existence itself, conscious of itself*.

*You are not in the dream; the dream is in you*.

Just as in sleep, when the dream world rises within your mind and feels utterly real until you awaken, so too does this waking world arise within consciousness.

You are not a small object inside a vast universe. Rather, the universe appears within the infinite field of awareness that you are.

Space, time, thoughts, emotions, stars—all of it unfolds within the one conscious presence that is always here.

Quantum physics, too, points in this direction. It shows us that the observer plays a role in shaping what is observed.

At the most fundamental level, matter seems to flicker between possibilities, and collapses into form only upon observation.

Reality is not fixed—it responds to attention, to intention.

Forms appear, flicker, change, and pass away.

*But presence remains, unmoving and unchanged*.

*It is this presence—awareness—that is the constant amidst all change*.

Whether we call it atoms or pixels, both are merely expressions of something deeper. Light in the physical sense, and light in the symbolic sense—illumination, understanding, consciousness.

All appears within this light of awareness. The world may seem like a simulation, but not in the cold digital sense.

Rather, it is a luminous play of consciousness, arising moment by moment within itself.

The truth we seek is not in the complexity of the code, not in decoding the structures of the simulation.

*It is in the silence behind the screen, the stillness in which all experience unfolds.*

*That silence is not separate from us. It is what we are, before the stories, before the projections, before the dream.*

To ask if we live in a simulation is to begin a *journey inward.*

*And in that turning inward, we don’t find a computer or a god pressing buttons*.

We find awareness—pure, self-knowing, formless.

In that discovery, the question dissolves. For then it no longer matters whether it is a dream or not.

*You have awakened to what holds both dream and waking in its embrace.*
