The Deeper Layers Behind Pahalgam: Understanding the Strategic and Social Implications

By Dr. B.S. Chakravarthy

The recent incident at Pahalgam is not just another tragic event in a long history of provocations. Beneath its immediate violence, it appears to be part of a multi-layered strategy aimed at destabilizing India internally and internationally. The target is not merely security forces or innocent lives, but the very psychological, political, and social fabric that holds the country together.

A full-scale war with Pakistan is virtually impossible in today's world, given that both nations possess nuclear weapons. The nuclear deterrent acts not just as a shield, but as a cage, restricting conventional retaliation beyond certain thresholds. Pakistan’s behavior increasingly resembles that of a rogue state, especially with its abandonment of the Shimla Agreement, thereby making the Line of Control (LOC) conceptually obsolete. Without a mutually agreed border, controlling infiltration becomes a daunting task.

India can and will continue to conduct precision surgical strikes and covert operations against terror launchpads. However, the value of surgical strikes lies in their element of surprise. If such operations become regular and predictable, they risk losing their tactical advantage. Retaliatory strikes from Pakistan remain a possibility, keeping tensions perpetually simmering.

At a broader level, economic isolation, psychological warfare, and diplomatic encirclement are now important parts of India's strategy. Precision without escalation is key. Yet, every action must be weighed carefully, as international attention is constantly focused on South Asia. Even if Modi enjoys strong global approval, civilian casualties or excessive force could tarnish India’s reputation as a peaceful, responsible nation.

There is also a deeper plot unfolding. The perpetrators may aim not only to provoke India militarily but also to internationalize Kashmir once again — forcing India into a corner where it must either negotiate or risk diplomatic setbacks.

However, there is an even subtler and more dangerous dimension that needs urgent recognition. Such events create an undercurrent of mistrust within Indian society itself, particularly towards ordinary Muslim citizens who have no involvement whatsoever with militancy. Immature individuals, fueled by anger, fear, or misinformation, may begin to suspect their fellow citizens purely on the basis of religion. This risks disturbing the delicate harmony and peace that has, despite all challenges, continued to prevail across the subcontinent.

Sowing seeds of distrust among communities — between Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs, Christians — may well be an invisible but intentional aim of such attacks. A fragmented, suspicious society weakens itself from within, without the enemy needing to fire another shot.

It is therefore critical, while remaining vigilant against real threats, to guard equally against falling into the trap of collective suspicion. India’s greatest strength lies not just in its military or economy, but in its social fabric — in the capacity of its people to stand united, even when provoked.

What lies ahead is a phase requiring calm, wisdom, and unwavering patience. Targeted action against terrorists must go hand-in-hand with protection of the social unity that defines India's resilience. The real war is as much for securing territory and lives as it is for safeguarding the invisible bridges of trust between people.

In facing these challenges, India must remember: strength without wisdom breeds ruin; wisdom without strength invites aggression. It is the balance of both that will define the path forward.
